work. And while
there may not be an
English equivalent, work-related
health issues are a serious reality
here, too. How to know if your
job is hazardous to your health?
“Ask yourself three questions,”
says Dr. Michael Finkelstein,
founder of SunRaven, a wellness
centre in New York state. “How
well do I sleep? Am I at a healthy
weight? What is the quality of my
relationships?”
Losing sleep from job stress
doesn’t just leave you tired the
next day, it can literally make you
sick. “Both inadequate sleep and
high stress levels affect metabolic
activity and contribute to high
levels of cortisol,” he explains,
which can lead to weight issues
and other inflammatory and
immune-related conditions.
WHAT TO DO? Take inventory of
your creative potential, says Dr.
Finkelstein. You may not be as
stuck in your job as you imagine.
If you can build up the rest of your
life with healthy pursuits—hitting
the gym, taking a night class,
volunteering—the outcome may
surprise you. “In finding balance,
you may also find the courage
to leave an unhealthy job. Or, by
strengthening other areas of your
life, you might experience a shift
in perspective that changes your
attitude toward your job.”
