THE ICON
CHANEL No. 5
LAUNCHED in 1921
Why We Love It
Created by Coco Chanel, a woman
who shunned convention and lived
by her own rules, this fragrance
left the simple, flower-sweet scents
typical of the time in its wake.
When perfumer Ernest Beaux
countered its lush ylang-ylang,
jasmine and rose notes with an
overdose of aldehydes, he broke
the perfume mould, giving No. 5
its characteristic sparkle and trail,
which has become, to this day, the
signature of all French perfumery,
epitomizing feminine mystique. And
of course, there’s the sex. Marilyn
Monroe’s famous quip, that the only
thing she wore to bed was “a few
drops of No. 5,” lingers still.
